About Bodegas El Grifo
El Grifo is the oldest winery in the Canary Islands, founded in 1775 — and one of the ten oldest in all of Spain. Located in the heart of La Geria, Lanzarote's protected wine-growing landscape, it has maintained winemaking traditions for over 250 years. The Garcia Duran family acquired the bodega in 1880 and transformed it into a benchmark for Canarian viticulture. Now in its fifth generation, El Grifo remains family-owned.
The vineyard was established after the catastrophic volcanic eruptions of 1730-1736 that covered the island in lava and ash. This volcanic devastation ultimately created the unique 'picon' soil that defines Lanzarote's wines today. El Grifo also has a fascinating wine museum open to visitors.
